The information below is intended to provide guidance to an Incidence Command Officer
or Base Camp Operator when preparing to initiate a search.


Call in search dogs as part of your initial Response Team.
Dog/handler teams are trained to respond day or night.

Gather good maps of the area and have several copies
available for search personnel.

Gather accurate information on the person such as
description; clothing/shoes; habits; health; age.

Set up command post away from the Point Last Seen.

Preserve the Point Last Seen.

Establish communications and have radios available.

Have personnel very familiar with the area as a resource for the search.

Start to divide the area into search sectors using
natural boundaries, roads, streams, etc.

Make sure the dispatcher has good directions for the responders.
